Along the Zambezi River, which borders Zimbabwe and Zambia, are the breathtaking Victoria Falls. The Kololo tribe who inhabited the region in the 1800s referred to them as “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” or “the Smoke that Thunders”.

At the height of the flood season, 546 million cubic meters of water per minute plunge over the edge over a width of nearly two km into a deep gorge below, creating columns of spray that are visible from miles away.  The wide, placid Zambezi River is transformed into a fierce torrent that slashes through a series of striking gorges by the thunderous falls that cascade over the wide basalt cliff.

You can view the Falls from a fixed wing light aircraft, a microlight, a helicopter, and on foot. On Livingstone Island, where weddings can also be planned, it is even feasible to stand on the edge of the Falls during periods of reduced water. Along with adrenaline sports, the region is known for some of the world’s best white-water rafting.
